So.....my family and I made the 13hr trip to Gordon's Well/Imperial Sand Dunes over the President's Day weekend! What a trip...New truck pulled the trailer great and if I could have kept it under 65mph I would have gotten better gas mileage....buuuuuuuuuuuuut.....I didn't! So this was my (and the wife's) first experience w/11 mpg at 3.39/gallon, since they decided to ASS RAPE us on a traveling weekend and up the gas prices....
As for the dunes! It rained the day before we got there so it was heavy! Then the sand rails came!! The ruts were TERRIBLE...if I didn't have the stabilizer I'm not sure I would've survived the 3 hr rides! LOL
We didn't hit many large dunes but had fun on the small bowls and finding jumps...We headed out to Patton, which is the local racing hill! It is a steep dune that is at the beginning of one of the valleys... I was REALLY impressed w/the DS. I didn't beat my buddies yfz but he has EVERYTHING done to his, port/polish, HC piston, valves, cams, full pipe, intake, running race gas, etc.... and i was only behind him by 1 bike length...my other buddy has a similarly modded trx450r and I was beating him/he was beating me, just depended on who got the start...
The DS at sea level just KEPT ON PULLING all the way up the hill! It was CRAZY, so much different than at my 5K feet, like a brand new bike. So I knew that I wasn't going to beat them but only losing by a bike length and having a stock internal engine was exciting! Plus, my bike was DEFINITELY the best looking...
Kids got to really ride their quads for the first time and ROCKED EM! It was soo much fun watching them ride! We built a little double for my 5 and 7yr old and my 7 yr old boy actually hit it the first time out on a quad! We were all so happy and he was PSYCHED! He freaked out and that was probably the best part of the weekend! My 14yr old was riding the blaster much better as well! The blaster didn't quite run right but he had fun and was playing on the kiddy track as well! He was jumping the wife's trailblazer and tried his first no footer! LOL...
We actually stayed in El Centro at a hotel so the wife/kids could have a break from the dunes/sun and be able to shower and swim. That worked out great! Only $39 a night w/my brother's marriott discount...can't beat that!

- So overall, REALLY impressed w/the DS going up what I would consider great modded bikes that I KNOW are kept in top notch condition!
- The dunes were small compared to the dunes we have here and they were VERY rutted from the rails/other riders.
- The sand was much heavier than Utah/Idaho sand
- It was AWESOME to see the different rails and how crazy fast they were on the flat drags!
CONCLUSION: Too far away for me! I'll stick w/Sand Mountain here in Utah and still love what I consider the BEST dunes and campgrounds in the US - St Anthony, Idaho!
Pics of our amazing weekend w/great friends!!!
