It broke...
Alright... After my first real ride with my 08 DS450 X, I got the bike home to Des Moines from Wisconsin where it quit charging the battery. Found that the fuses don't match the user's manual and one was blown. Replaced that fuse and it started charging the battery again. BUT it was making this awful knocking sound. I read a little here and everyone said these engines are really loud, so I was only a little worried. I changed the oil/filter etc. Started fine. Idled fine, but knocking. I thought I'd take it down the street once. Bad idea. It died at mid rev in high gear. Started once... died. Won't start and barely turns over. Smoke from the exhaust smells like coolant.
I'm no mechanic. Dealership is closed on Monday. I'll take it in tomorrow and give an update when I hear more. Not a good start to a 4wheeler I just bought in November.

Pink wire cut, airbox lid and filter, spark arrestor removed. Basically stock.

hmm, well make sure your dealer hooks it up to budds. It will probably tell you what went wrong. Sounds like maybe a head gasket because of the coolant.

ya, coolant tells you the first place to look is head gasket! But blaster is right, hook it up and it'll tell what happened! Might cost some but will lead you right to the source!

That makes me nervous I have 45 min on my ds, and I put of my velocity filter and full exhaust, and fmf programmer, have yet to ride it since, but when I did start it, it ran fine and I revved it once and it went to a low idle and started knocking....should I be concerned?
Btw austin we should ride ur 30 min from me

I definitely think it involves the head, but I'm concerned about other internals. The starter will just barely turn it over and the battery is full. If I put it in gear 5 and try to push it a bit, I can just barely get the motor to turn over by pushing the tire with my foot. So it's not completely seized up, but a valve is stuck or something making it very difficult to turnover. It shouldn't be that difficult... especially in 5th gear. I don't know... Like I said, I'm no mechanic.
I also have no idea of my dealership's capabilities, but I'll find out tomorrow when they open.
I haven't read anything on this forum about someone taking out the top end. Has anyone else heard of similar issues?

It would have went into limp mode if it over heated. If you want to try and get it started again, first make sure there's oil and coolant in the bike, then pull it in 2nd gear or 3rd gear to pop start it.
