Question New member looking to buy with questions

Hey guys, I'm considering buying a new leftover 2008 DS 450 at a dealer that is blowing them out this month at a smoking price. What do you guys think of these quads as far as durability, ride, power, handling and build quality? I probably won't make many mods to it the first season, I just want something to trail ride in some of the woods here in Michigan. If I'm on this thing for 8 hours of trail riding will I be beat to crap? For the price it looks like a pretty good deal and I don't think they will last long at $3199.00 plus tax. Thanks.

HOLY SHIT! That is a crazy price...maybe not up there but here it is!

Anyways, great deal. Just do some research on this site for the recalls and updates that NEED to be done before I would purchase it! As far as power, handling, durability it will be great as long as you take care of the updates/recalls!

I'd jump on it! Hell, if I found one for that price I might be a backup quad! LOL

There seams to be a clutch problem with some of the ATV's. That 2008 model with have the old one. There is a new clutch update. I would tell the dealer to update the clutch, then you will but it. I wish I had done that. Someone here did it & it worked. Keep in mind they dont have to do it, as it is not a recall, its a service update..

Also, that is a CRAZY price!!!! I paid about double that, like 2 months ago... but that stuff is more pricey around here...

I thought it was a great price. I'll ask the dealer about the clutch update. I can't decide between this and something like the Outlander or Renegade 500. I won't be doing any track racing and I know with the solid rear axle it won't ride as good as the Outy or Ren but those are a little over $5k each. How much of a beating will I take trail riding this DS 450 all day?

All trail riding in the UP and some lower parts of Michigan. I'm in pretty good shape so that shouldn't be an issue.

I bought my 08 DS450 last year for $3299 so you are getting a better deal. And, I had to pay to ship it to me.

I bought it as a cheap way for me to ride with my wife and her Brute Force 650i. The DS450 has been great on the trails so far. Its light weight helps. The solid axel does give you a flatter turn with less body roll than the independant suspensions. I don't feel beat up after a day on the trails. However, not having reverse means you have to do some pulling and lifting of the ATV when you drive yourself into a bind. Also, a day or so later my knees can be sore. I think I stand up more on the DS450 than I did when riding my wife's Brute Force. The DS450 doesn't have the fender (like most 450's) protection so you wear a lot more mud than you would on some other ATV's. The brute force can power thru mud while keeping the rider clean. For the DS450, I find that speed is life when it comes to deep mud.

The DS450 is geared a little tall for creeping along trails. I dropped a tooth on the front sprocket.

The independent rear sport ATV's excell in some situations (clearance?) on the trail. The solid axel ATV's excell in other situations (cornering?). I think you would be happy with the performance and money saved with the DS450.

Do research on recalls and updates. Be sure to get them done before you buy it. I had everything done before they shipped my DS450 to me.

IMO that's a good price for a new efi, light quad that comes with great suspension. With a mod or 2 can be even a better trail machine. If you are trail riding it & run good oil, I doubt you will ever have an issue with the clutch etc... I can be wrong but seems like any issue the Can am has had has been from hard racing.

If you do run 22 in the rear for clearance, I would try dropping the front sprocket to a 13 tooth.

Good luck
