3 worst Ds production problems

Hello All ,
I have been Asked By CAN AM to provide them with the top 3 largest (most annoying ) problems from the factory with the Ds 450 .
I truly cannot answer this , as the bikes that my son races are so far from stock that I am not the person to answer this question . However , you guys (and Gals) are !
I will be sending an e-mail to Can Am corporate in 5 days with the results of this thread. ....

If you could fix/modify THREE things on the NEW DS , What would they be , and why ?
I realize that this is opening PANDORAS BOX , But please think of this as your chance to ask CAN-AM corporate what to fix and why ...
This does not mean that they will fix what we say, however they are asking our opinion , that is more than most companies will ever do !

PLEASE BE PROFESSIONAL HERE, I would like to print this thread and take it to the corporate office !
Thank you

The electric system.

I wish it was easier for me to troubleshoot the system.
Or just make it more reliable

The next is the frame, its a great idea weldless frame, but lets face it it needs beefed up in alot of areas.

The last is cooling system, when i first heard gas boiling in my tank. I know it was a issue. When i was riding and it went into limp mode, i knew it had to be dealt with.
The coolent system needs steamlined a bit. And while you in there get rid of the upper seat post on the coolent tank its a bad idea and breaks so easy

spot on with what gregory said... Frame needs to be way stronger, electrical was a problem on mine, and everyone I've talked to has cooling issues.

which guy did you talk to? robert or bernard? i talked to bernard back in north carolina for HOURS about this lol....

plastics NEED to be quick release! yamaha got it down with the SE models, if can-am wants a TRULY race-ready machine, do it!

they also need to get a high ignition wire set in there, like the NGK but make it STOCK

id say frame too, but i havent had an issue....id say clutch....but thats supposedly fixed now...electrical could get cleaned up....funny how BRP and BCS and motoworks all have race-harnesses you could get....maybe make the xmx model already have the wire kits? let the base model keep the relay spiderweb clusterf**k

better lights. seriously....the stock lights blow. i took em off and would rather just not ride at night.....factory LEDs would be badass.

oh and tell em to STFU and make one with the rotax 257 2stroke! its actually a cleaner engine than the 450! and more power!

Cooling is a main issue on all ds450 models, front seat post is weak and need to be made of aluminum, and on the X XC model the swing arm skid plate needs to be redesigned or come stock with sprocket and rotor guards so I dont end up with a derailed chain on the side of a hill again. Also the coil mounts need to be made of a stronger rubber or nylon. I bought my ds450x xc in august and the front coil mounts are dry rotted and are about to come off.

I have yet to experience electrical problems not caused by dealer mess ups. I do have a small problem starting sometimes. It will just click when I hit the starter button after I have stalled if the fuel pump or the fan is running. I have already put a new battery with enough cranking amps and checked the charging and starting circuits for resistance.

I hope this helps. Also its nice to see a manufacturer reaching out to the consumer not to the high dollar race teams.

1. change the cooling system to somthing like honda or yamaha...would probably weigh 5lbs less.
2. closed loop efi, I know they can't have a race map anymore but I shouldn't have to buy a $200+ FMI along with my $500+ exhaust(sans Motoworks). Considering I just read a Motocross mag and they talked about how doggy the 52hp new Honda 450 was, I would love to see those guys have to throw $2500 into a engine to race it or maybe just make the xxc and xmx "compitition" only models like the bikes are so they truely come "race" ready.
3. Easier access to the engine, radiator, and ECU. It's not very fun spending 15 minutes taking the plastics off everytime you want to mess with something underneath it. Maybe make the plastics up front in 3 or 4 pieces so you can just take off a couple pieces instead of having to remove the 10lbs of it thats on it now.

0Honestly,
1. I can't even explain to you the overheating problems we've had on Suzuki's and Honda's. So really, all bikes overheat when you run them hard so I can't complain too much.
2. The frames definitely could use some work at the hips and the front.
3. When it comes to plastics, the best thing you can do is replace all of the bolts that hold them on with Philips head bolts. I can take the plastics off in 15 seconds with a drill. Then you have access to everything. So I see no where to improve there.
4. The wiring harnesses are definitely junk.

And on a side not hcomras, We've told them before if they put the 2 stroke motor in the frame, we will buy one. They never will, but me and dad have been talking about fabbing one in when we get a motor.

Yes easier ways to take the plastic off. like a removable hood would be good which companies would start making more custom hoods.

have the xmx come already with the lowered subframe would be sick too!

kill switch already hooked up

stock clamp for the front sprocket rather than c-clip

like others said too. better cooling system.

1)Innovate a quick release axle (industry first) carrier out in under a minute.
2)Swiss cheese style plastics should be replaced with stylish scoops, to keep from boiling. I did something to this nature to my plastics. Looks and works great.
3)Hydraulic clutch please.

Quick release tabs would be a wonderful addition, as long as they could take the abuse of a racer putting them through their paces.
Seat post and coolant overflow definitely need to be addressed. Whats wrong with a radiator cap on the radiator?
FMI should come stock on XMx & XXc models. Have clear instructions on how to program it under the seat.
This should also be set up as a poll!!
