Overheating solutions?
I am currently looking to purchase a new 2008 or 2009 ds 450 and I have been looking around the forums and noticed a lot about the machines overheating and I have seen many solutions from placing an inline cooler, to the drilling out plastics, to changing out the coolant. Although there is one that I have not seen come up.
I was curious if anyone has ever wrapped their exhaust at the headers to help keep the heat in the exhaust tubing? It seems like wrapping the exhaust would help insulate some of the heat on the front of the quad so that there is less heat getting stuck up under the front plastics. Has anyone done this? And maybe had luck with it helping keep the machine running cooler?

I think a few people have done it here, but I dont think it would help as much as anything you just listed. These engines run hot, & it doesnt help that the gas tank & coolant tank are right above the engine. Getting cool air to those places helps more than exhaust wrap I would say.

I have mine wrapped. I wrapped it, aluminum heat tape under side of gas tank and swiss cheesed front plastics, and put engine ice in all at the same time. The result was no more boiling fuel or overheating.
The heat tape knocked down alot of the heat. But I don't think it will be good enough by itself. I think you at least also heat tape fuel tank and swiss cheese the plastics. I also think it depends on what you are going to do with it. ie race, trail, dune, etc.

I plan to do lots of trail riding when the time comes. Is it not as big a problem for trail riders? Like does the overheating problem just plague the racers?

No a lot of us have overheating issues. I ride dunes mainly now and had a few problems. The BCS inline cooler helped along with water wetter. The header wrap did little or nothing at all

I have neVer had overheating issues. I only race and ride on tracks. Some people have issues but I think running engine ice will solve that problem.

Try engine ice or water wetter. If you hear your fuel boiling consider the next steps. That's what I did and everything worked out.
