either way actually since its on an eccentric. if you keep rolling one way, it will loosen back up .

also, you should probably replace the chain with a chain that has a master link. DID 520 chain is what i used. it can wait until your sprockets are worn out though

When / if you build a high torque motor, set it so that if the carrier slips, it will tight ten the chain and not loosen it , we had alot of torque being applied and actually Spun the carrier which loosened the chain and cost us a DNF . I always set ours up to tighten while the bike is moving foreward.
Just a tip!

if it gets too tight and you hit a decent jump it will explode when u land. and too loose will fall off and could get bound up and break sprocket or case by front sprocket, either way best to not have the carrier move at all lol..

I Treat my carriers w/ Anti sieze , and we have snapped a few carrier bolts trying to resolve the issue .... We have had the carrier move when i had the bolts OVERTIGHTENED!
99% of you will never deal with this issue, I am just saying .... you have to set it, set it to be fail safe!
NO , I will never put it together w/o anti-sieze, I have also had to replace a swing arm over a siezed up carrier. Never again!
Hope that I explained it to you properly.
