New Guy with a few questions.

Hello All.
New Guy on used DS450 X, located in the upstate of South Carolina.

I just picked up this used 450X yesterday for $2800. I did add the tires and do realize they are a bit hard for the track. But I’m not going to race, mainly chase around my 13 year old son on his modded out Raptor 350. He is getting pretty darn good on the MX track and just riding in general, and to be honest, I couldn’t keep up with my BF750 (800lb) bike, it would just beat me to death and I’m not allowed on the tracks. So I found this. At first I’m thinking a good deal, and OMG is it fast with just the PINK wire mod and exhaust. But I am finding a couple small issues, and hope they are not serious.

If you can help with any of the below, it would be greatly appreciated.
1. Starting seems to take a little long and then it needs to warm up a bit. Is this normal for a EFI bike?
2. The Clutch seems to make a bit of noise when in neutral, once you apply a bit of pressure, it goes away.
3. Back brake not working too well, hopefully just needs adjustment.
4. Chain is white, previous owner said it was some sort of coating that makes it turn white?
5. What simple MODS should I consider? Header Pipe, handle bars, levers? I ordered a Graphics kit to cover the plastic and ODI Rogue grips.
Thanks
JAM

The white chain could just be wax, keep it lubed and if it makes u nervous just replace it. Contact bcs for their clutch kit (like stated above). Power wise ur at a good spot....suprised ur allowed on the track....that hmf is ungodly loudlol...as for the brakes, cut a slit in the rubber seal on the reservoir and bleed the system. For starting, replace all 3 relays and all 6 fuses for safe measure.
Simple mods are cooling mods. Cut up ur plastics! Bcs inline cooler! Do a search on cooling mods or check ou the FAQ for mpre info

Maybe i'm not allowed on track, honestly i dont know...and yes way loud!!!! My son has a FMF Powercore 4 that is much easier on the ears. Do i need to cut a slit to bleed the system, cant i just remove the bleeding screw and add fluid until full? I will need to search the cooling mods, but that sounds important.

The slit in the rubber seal is because the reservoir creates a vaccuum and doesn't allow fluid into the piston. Cutting the seal roughly 1/4" and then bleeding the system will help create pressure at the top of the system where it belongs. The fmf for the ds is not that good. Look into the motoworks sr4 g2 full or slip on pipe, they are pretty cheap and great bang for ur buck. Or look for a used yoshimura pipe, also very queit and power output is increased as well.

check your valve clearances, quads that get hard to start sometimes need a valve adjustment, make sure yours are in spec, the head pipe on our quad is actually quite good, a slip on works just fine, get the bcs intake with either k&n or uni filter, your preference, bcs has posted on here 2 1/2 horsepower gain, your slip on is a good one for this quad, its just loud, check if hmf has a quiet core insert or go with another pipe, the clutch squeal is normal for the 08's, there is clutch issues, run your VIN with a dealer or brp to see if any updates were done and talk to BCS, they can straighten that bad boy out, welcome to the dark side, you will love it

So here is what I’m looking at:
Valve Adjustment = $100 or more (just an estimate)
BCS Clutch Basket = $260
BCS Clutch Cover MOD = $40
BCS Inline Radiator Cooler = $40
Radiator Coolant = Engine Ice = $25 (how much does it take)
HMF Quiet Core Insert = $25
Motor Works Clutch Plate Set = $200
Heavy Duty Springs = $40
Maxxis Tires = $400
AMR Graphics = $170
ODI Rogue grips = $30

$1330…..dark side is right!

For the most part, I agree. Especially on the clutch. If it has done all right so far, it should be ok.

When cold, mine cranks for a very seconds before it fires and I always let it warm up for a couple of minutes before I ride it anyway.

My rear brakes wouldn't work at first either, I tried the slit method and bleeding them. I finally replaced the brake fluid with some new DOT4 stuff. Even after that, the brakes where spongy for a bit but after some use they finally started to bite like normal. Now they work great.

First thing I would do is change the oil and filter and put in a high quality synthetic. I would also clean and re oil the air filter. Maybe consider switching to a NO-TOIL type cleaner/oil system. Way easier to maintain.

Since there is a pipe on the bike, I would also pull the front plastic and verify that the pink wire is actually cut and pull the lower spark plug to get an idea of how they are gapped and what condition they are in.

Then be sure to check the front end for proper toe and play in the ball joints. My toe setting was way of from the factory and if the previous owner hit anything it might be of some.

As far as the chain goes, Maxima Chain Wax and Bel Ray Super Clean leave a white film on your chain. Buy a good cleaner and lube and get and attack your chain. Be sure to check you chain slack. It has to be done with a rider on the quad.
