NECC Round 1 Helmet Cam Video
Here is a link to my helmet cam video from NECC Round 1:
I just got an 08 Can-Am DS450 leftover and was accepted to the BRP Racer Program, so it was equipped with the Stage 1 kit. I had about an hour and a half to break it in before the race. I am really happy with the machine except for the starting issues which are evident in the video :/ It quit starting altogether around the 1 hr mark and I had to pull off. Luckily I was near the pits. I'll be looking into the starting issue in the next couple of days. After pressure washing everything I was able to get it to start by finagling the start button, I think dirt may have gotten in there. Also, there is a starting/stalling issue that might be related to running the race ECM with the airbox lid on. Any comments about that?

first thing I notice is that you are using the thumb throttle when starting. NEVER touch the throttle when starting the DS..it's EFI...that could easily flood the bike out due to the amount of fuel the EFI injects when starting.
secondly..did you cut the pink wire?
third...having the airbox on shouldn't cause any starting issues (that i've heard)...
also...be VERY careful using a pressure washer...can easily cause electrical disconnects, blow gaskets and screw up internals..not saying DON'T use it, just be careful. There have been ppl on here that used a pressure washer and had starting issues because of the on/off switch connection...
Glad you like the bike, looked solid in the race...

Thanks for the feedback. I will check the pink wire this week. I just picked the bike up on Thursday night from my dealer and he installed the race kit so I'm not sure if they did the wire. Is the pink wire still something to be done with the "race ecm?" I just ordered a service book and hope to do most of the future work but time doesn't allow that like it used to :/

the pink wire releases a race map...completely separate from the race ecu. They work in conjunction though. I would cut the pink wire (do a search on this site for a good writeup) and stop using the throttle to start it..
good luck..and the service book is worth "GOLD"

What all does the race ecm do? From what I read, it just takes away the limp and changes the temps that the fan comes on? Not sure if there is any performance gain though. (or anything that the air box lid on would do)

Hi guys, thanks for the tips. I'm totally new to these DS450s. I cannot comment on the effect of the race ECU, but the MotoWorks slip-on prefers the airbox lid to be off. I had to install it because the conditions were very, very wet and muddy on Saturday. I wonder if the combination of the airbox lid on, the Motoworks muffle and the weather had an effect on the starting. I typically did not hit the throttle until after it turned over a bunch without starting. It also helped to turn the key off and then back on in some instances. I think the fact that it stopped tunring over at all is related to dirt and grime entering the button from overuse due to me stalling a few times and it not starting well.

I run mine with the air box lid on because I race GNCC and it should not affect your starts, I've experienced the start button not working in muddy races you just gotta wiggle it around until it starts to turn over. As for the dead engine starts I turn the key on around ten seconds before the starts and i find it starts faster in nuetral and dont touch the throttle at all
