Tie rod & ball joint questions

1. Ok so I have been trying to get the ball joints off the tie rods (on the spindle & steering stem) because I want to get some powder coating done. I have tried a pickle fork from an automotive store and it was too wide (kind of tore one of the boots), tried hitting the bolt on the ball joint with a hammer, put the nut back on the tie rod and hit that (didn't put it on far enough so when I hit it with the hammer I started to mess the threads up on the bolt, and I went and got a ball joint splitter tool but it was too wide as well. I don't want to hit the a arms with a hammer to loosen the bolt up because I don't want to scratch or dent the arms. I am thinking that it just may be easier to get new ball joints and wreck these ones getting them out. It will cost me less to get BCS tied rods and joints ($115 for set) than getting oem ball joints and I did find some ball joints on Ebay but they were $93 for the joints. Is there any other way to get the ball joints out?

2. The lower a arms ball joints are they pressed in? I see there a c clip on so I am not sure if that is all that is holding it in. I am thinking before powder coating they will want all the ball joints and rubber off of the parts.

3. The part that is greased on the upper a arm is that pressed in or can I just pull that out?

I only got as far are removing the bumpers & the a arms so this weekend I want to finish. Thanks for the information.
