Alright... After my first real ride with my 08 DS450 X, I got the bike home to Des Moines from Wisconsin where it quit charging the battery. Found that the fuses don't match the user's manual and one was blown. Replaced that fuse and it started charging the battery again. BUT it was making this awful knocking sound. I read a little here and everyone said these engines are really loud, so I was only a little worried. I changed the oil/filter etc. Started fine. Idled fine, but knocking. I thought I'd take it down the street once. Bad idea. It died at mid rev in high gear. Started once... died. Won't start and barely turns over. Smoke from the exhaust smells like coolant.
I'm no mechanic. Dealership is closed on Monday. I'll take it in tomorrow and give an update when I hear more. Not a good start to a 4wheeler I just bought in November.
hmm, well make sure your dealer hooks it up to budds. It will probably tell you what went wrong. Sounds like maybe a head gasket because of the coolant.
ya, coolant tells you the first place to look is head gasket! But blaster is right, hook it up and it'll tell what happened! Might cost some but will lead you right to the source!
That makes me nervous I have 45 min on my ds, and I put of my velocity filter and full exhaust, and fmf programmer, have yet to ride it since, but when I did start it, it ran fine and I revved it once and it went to a low idle and started knocking....should I be concerned?
Btw austin we should ride ur 30 min from me
I definitely think it involves the head, but I'm concerned about other internals. The starter will just barely turn it over and the battery is full. If I put it in gear 5 and try to push it a bit, I can just barely get the motor to turn over by pushing the tire with my foot. So it's not completely seized up, but a valve is stuck or something making it very difficult to turnover. It shouldn't be that difficult... especially in 5th gear. I don't know... Like I said, I'm no mechanic.
I also have no idea of my dealership's capabilities, but I'll find out tomorrow when they open.
I haven't read anything on this forum about someone taking out the top end. Has anyone else heard of similar issues?
when u took it down the street was the fan on? did your bike overheat? my bike makes a lot of weird noises at idles sometimes and i've never had a problem with it. a
It would have went into limp mode if it over heated. If you want to try and get it started again, first make sure there's oil and coolant in the bike, then pull it in 2nd gear or 3rd gear to pop start it.
Dealership called. It's blown up. All the way. Bottom end at least. They want $2300 to fix it.
I said... why would it blow up? He says, "Maybe from riding it for long periods of time at high rpms. 20-30minutes. They aren't made for that, ya know." I told him I was riding with 9 other quads, 3 of which were CanAms, 2 others were ancient and poorly maintained, none of them blew up. Wtf?
The mechanic was gone for the day, so I didn't get to talk with him. I'll talk to him tomorrow and see what he has to say.
You guys have any insight? If I'm going to rebuild it, can I get stronger parts? I don't need it to be faster, just consistent and dependable.
That is a really scary thought. I picked my 08 up Jan 30 and have put on about .2 miles. I am now debating on getting an extended warranty for it! Everyone tells me that I don't need it, we can fix it if it breaks, but I don't want to put any money into it this early. Hope all goes well for u and keep us posted
$2300 Jeeeze. Even on ebay, there are new ones for that cost..... The other places I was looking at was about $450 for labor to tear it down, clean it, and put together again +parts... Let me know what you were thinking about upgrading as I might be doing the same and not sure what all parts to put in it. I don't really need more power, just something slightly more peppy and durable..
OK, let say that really strange , mine did that just like you are saying and it was the stator , the flywheel bolts broke and ruin the stator they get sock on the flywheel and the engine won’t turn. Go and get your bike back and check it yourself, mounted on your quad, the right side now don’t pay that amount of money first get your phone and call BCS, if you have to rebuilt do it right and with some power, but check your stator, flywheel bolts
Don't take it to grimes they are a joke, take it albia, they will take care of you, treat you like a person not a customer, bout a hour drive from des moines but def worth your time. Just my 2 cents
I spoke with the mechanic yesterday. He said the entire bottom end needs replaced. Told me he hasn't taken the rod off the crank yet, but the piston is all scarred up and needs replaced. Says the crank is also scarred up. He wants to replace the crank, bearings, rod, piston and gaskets. Says the crank comes with the rod, bearing and pin, but can only be purchased from BRP for $950. He did tell me he'd put a Ron Wood piston in it if I bought one which is a little less than BRP.
I friend of mine said I should take the crank and rod to a machine shop or motor shop to get their opinion and maybe they can put the crank in a mill or lathe and fix it. I know what all these parts do and how they work, but I'm not a mechanic and couldn't look at the crank to know if it needs replaced or could be fixed.
They still don't have an explanation of why this would happen. Mechanic is still guessing high revs for a long period of time. Told me even being topped out for a mile or two. I'm not sure about that... that's less than 2 minutes. Obviously I don't just hold it against the rev limiter. Maybe I hit it a few times before shifting, but I don't just keep it up there. However, the trails in WI were fairly high speed, but I had to lift at least a little if not a lot for every curve and they were never more than a mile apart and usually much closer. We also never drove more more than 20 minutes before stopping to let the others catch up.
Also, what about the knocking? If nothing is actually broken, what was knocking? And why could I smell coolant? The exhaust clearly smelled like burnt coolant. He hasn't said anything about the top end. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but I don't know this dealership or mechanic and I'm not sure I trust them just yet. Someone told me to take it to the dealer in Albia instead of Grimes, but they have the same owner, so I doubt they would tell me anything different. I'm sure they share the same computer system where the mechanic's notes are kept.
I think my first step will be to get a friend of mine with motor building experience to go over there and take a look at it. Get his opinion.

I think your nuts for letting any dealer work on your motor and not listening to some of post on this thread, unless it's fully covered under warantee....You should have sent it to one of the better engine builders like BCS, Rossier, mine, Motorwork's, Rage....for the price of BRP parts and service like cranks and rods etc as Blizzard said you could buy a used quad part what you got out or keep for xtras....If I were you I go to the dealer put it all in a crate ship it to BCS, they have used parts, you'd make out in the long run having a well built motor by people that know it like the back of thier hands AND WHY THEY FAIL WOULD BE A GOOD START LOL....hell for $1000 I'd buy a Falicon stock or stroker crank and rod in it and let er rip!!...that falicon be waaaay lighter and better balanced and buy you more reliable stock hps, or a BCS 450 race motor for what you going to pay that dealer when it's over.
Sounds like ours when the oil squirter made it to the crank and scarred it up which we buffed and smoothed out....high revs non-sense you have a rev limiter and TONs of engine heat protection modes in the ECU. Only way I can see high revs hurting is if you had no rev limiter which you do 5500 or 8,000 for 09 and you kept driving the temp up past 250F into the 300F + range, then you blow a head gasket first more than likely, tranny scaring or metal failure from temp won't look like scars more like deformed or out of round metal, but the oil cooled steel crank would not go first, crank probably got scared from some metal object floating around in the case which would sound like knocking and maybe a blown head gasket to boot....the engine management system has no way to protect against foriegn object damage (fod) in the motor case.
Well got to hand it to you my jaw was on the table whole time I read your last post lol..... ....thought we were the only one that had these problems.
i think if your gut is telling you to raise the BS flag then get someone else to look at it! Sustained periods of time w/the throttle in the last 3/4 shouldn't be that bad...especially only 2 minutes at best. I would think(keyword think) that it would/should withstand higher rpms, not at the rev limiter for that long but hard running!
I would take it somewhere else, or get someone else to look at it...and the coolant smell should still be a head gasket issue.
I will never got back to Hicklin in Grimes. Whenever I went in there they never seemed to want my business and didn't really want to deal with me. Also got fed up with them not being able to get the correct oil filter. :rocketwhore:
It's been a few days since my last update. I've been trying to decide what to do.
I talked to the guys at BCS who were awesome and have tons of experience with this. They said sometimes the cranks come apart which obviously screws up the rod bearing and causes the knocking, piston scarring, and eventually the end. They said they could weld my crank just like they weld their race quads for much less than a new BRP crank. So, I was planning on sending my motor internals to BCS and letting the dealer install them, but now I'm thinking I'll just go get the whole quad and send BCS the entire motor to rebuild.
Is it difficult to get the motor out of these? Will I have to remove any of those BRP lock bolts in the frame?
nope just remove one side the little angle one that attaches to the front shock and subframe, and then its only 3 or 4 motor mounts and out comes the motor. takes about 1.5-2hrs and its pretty straight forward
